“Don’t you ever let a soul in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are.”

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, was born March 28, 1986 in Manhattan, New York, U.S. She began playing the piano at four, taking lessons throughout her childhood as her mother insisted. Through these lessons, she learned to create music by ear and was encouraged by her parents to pursue music–attending a Creative Arts Camp and gaining early admission to Collaborate Arts Project 21.

In 2008 Gaga rose to fame with her debut album, The Fame. Her singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” quickly topped the charts, reaching number one in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the UK. Her five succeeding albums all debuted in the Billboard Top 200, and, in 2009, Gaga spent a record 150 weeks on the UK Singles Chart and became the most downloaded female act in a year in the US, with 11.1 million downloads sold. Later, in 2011, her single, “Born This Way,” broke another record: with more than one million copies sold within 5 days. Gaga is the only female artist to achieve four singles that sold at least 10 million copies globally.

In 2012, Gaga launched the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit aimed at youth empowerment. Additionally, Gaga actively supports LGBTQ+ rights worldwide, as a bisexual woman herself. She is considered a “gay icon” and attributes much of her early success to her LGBTQ+ fans.

“I want women — and men — to feel empowered by a deeper and more psychotic part of themselves. The part they’re always trying desperately to hide. I want that to become something that they cherish.”
